This is most a rant about SciFi/Fantasy/Fanfic so if you don't read that, just ignore me.

Well as of a day or so ago, my current opus, HP and the Circle's End, http://fanfiction.portkey.org/story/4941 , is done barring the completion of one added scene. 60 chapters, 410K words later, the cesspool of insanity, hormones and love potions that was HBP is fixed.

With that, when I posted the latest chapter I got a flame...now it wasn't the only one I've ever gotten, by any means, but he basically insulted my beliefs, talent, sanity, whatever...who cares, he's an asshole...

But it bring up one point that I wish to question. One of his "points" was that it was improbable, unlikely, insane, whatever, that I made the main characters powerful.

What is this fear that I often see with making the characters powerful enough to do what they need to do, I've seen it with so many fanfics in HP where Harry is frankly a wimp, and wins through luck, luv or some asinine plot device. What's wrong with a little arse kicking? It's the same thing that was seen in many of the Expanded Universe Star Wars novels, in that so many of the authors seemed afraid to use Luke to what his abilites should have been...People, Jedi, mages (I.E. Dumbledore/Voldemort/Harry/Gandalf),whatever are supposed to unbalance the field. They are the BFG (That's Big Fucking Gun for those of you not in the know) of the universes they are in.

You Modify the plot, use superior numbers, whatever to balance them out, you don't neuter them...

Just my thoughts, feel free to disagree.
